The flagpole kid with her new business highlighted in the commercial appeal newspaper

Flagpole Express is a family owned business that was inspired by the patriotism of a little 6-year-old girl. Back on the terrible day of 9/11/2001, I was tasked with explaining to my young daughter what terrorism was and why it is so important for us to stand for our beliefs and our freedom. This was a tough time for us all. I owned a Fence company at the time and had several fencing supplies in the back yard. One weekend, Emily approached me and asked if we could build a flagpole out of one of the pieces of chain link top rail to let everyone know she loved the United States of America. As a father, there was only one answer I could provide – Absolutely!

Beautiful sunset with our residential flagpoles

We built a very simple flagpole and proudly displayed it in our front yard. It wasn’t long before our neighbor noticed our flagpole and asked us where we got it. Emily chimed quickly and said, “I made it Mr. Cook and I will build you one to”. After we installed Mr. Cook’s flagpole, he gave her a $20 bill and she was so proud. She took her money to the local gas station to buy candy and other things that a 6-year-old likes. Joe the gas station owner asked Emily where she got all this money and she told him she sold a flagpole. After Emily explained how she did this, Joe asked her to put one up at both of his gas stations. Emily shook his hand and sold two flagpoles at $75 a piece which was more in line with the cost of the material, labor and some mark up..

Recreation of her Commercial Appeal picture 10 years later

My young entrepreneur asked if she could make some more and put them by the road with a For Sale sign on them. I agreed to this and before I knew it, we had a little business. Emily bought a pony a horse trailer and got very involved with a local saddle club. By the time she was 12 she had 7 horses and was on her 3rd horse trailer. This little business has afforded Emily and our family to do things that we never would have been able to do otherwise. The American Dream is possible and we love doing what we do. We have met so many great people over the years with similar interest and patriotism for our great nation. God Bless America!!!
